Portrays human beings as higher animal lacking free will, their lives determined by natural forces of heredity and environment and by basic drives over which they have no control and which they do not fully conprehend.

Characters in naturalistic novels and plays are typically the middle-class people of everyday life, motivated largely by such animalistic drives as sex, hunger, and fear.
